Reconnect With Nature

If I asked you to close your eyes and picture your “happy place,” what would your scenario be? A very common response to this question paints a picture of a scene in nature. The beach–feet in the sand and sun on your face; the forest–the sound of wind whispering in the leaves; on a river–the sound of the current babbling and clapping. But what does nature have to offer you, and why is it so impactful? I’d like to introduce you to…

Nature: the world’s great therapist.

Many studies have been conducted exploring the connection between the human psyche and time in nature. One study highlighted a particularly interesting discovery; a walk in nature led to a decrease in rumination and anxiety for many individuals. Another study suggests that spending in time in or near nature may decrease feelings of loneliness and increase feelings of well-being. But what about those who would prefer to skip out on the bug-bites and the uncontrollable elements of nature? According to one source, even activities such as cultivating houseplants, interacting with animals, or observing nature through a window can have a marked impact on mental health. How can YOU increase your exposure to nature to reap the benefits that it offers? Here are some ideas to get you started!

  1. Step outside on your lunch break!
  2. Take a walk, run, or bike ride.
  3. Buy a houseplant (or two, or three…)
  4. Let the sun shine on your face.
  5. Drink your coffee at the park instead of on the road.
  6. Visit a cat cafe (research cat cafe’s in your area)!
  7. Plan a trip to the beach, the mountains, or the woods.
  8. Find a video or audio clip of your favorite nature sounds.
  9. Download or purchase an album of bird sounds.
  10. Have a picnic!
  11. Go camping, or book a cabin.
  12. Engage in therapy in a private outdoor space, or phone a friend from the great outdoors!

See what nature has to offer you! Even if you aren’t able to access nature daily or for very long increments, a little may go a long way. Consider inviting a friend along, or step out on your own to seek some solitude! Pay close attention to the way it makes you feel, and allow nature to ground and center you.
